The studio

Work gathered in the field.

Who we are

A documentary-led production studio.

Fieldwork Films is the production studio of Derek Amengual, a Brooklyn-based director of photography, documentary filmmaker, producer, editor, and colorist with more than a decade of work across five continents.

We make films for the moments brands, nonprofits, and institutions need to be believed: a founder's first interview, a fundraising campaign that has to land, a story a magazine has wanted for years, a recruit's first impression of a company.

The work is documentary in posture, even when it's branded. We start with real people, real places, real time, and bring cinematic craft to what's actually there.

What we do

Senior craft, on the call sheet.

Most of our projects are led end-to-end by a small team with Derek as director of photography and director, supported by trusted producers, editors, and sound. We don't sub-contract under a logo. Every project gets a senior filmmaker present from kickoff to delivery.

That makes us a good fit for teams who want documentary sensibility without an agency layer, and for agencies who want a director-DP who can carry a piece from concept through final color.

Derek Amengual

Founder & lead filmmaker.

Derek is a director of photography, documentary filmmaker, producer, editor, and colorist based in Brooklyn. His work spans branded documentary, nonprofit and impact campaigns, editorial commissions, and independent short films.

He's filmed on five continents, in deserts, on mountain walls, on Broadway, and in operating rooms. He started the studio to bring documentary craft to clients who want their stories told carefully, not pumped up or flattened by an agency.

Outside the studio, he climbs, rides, and travels, usually with a camera nearby.
